Richard Pyshorn FRGS

From National Security to Natural Security

Richard Pyshorn FRGS is the founder of Secure Forests CIC, bringing together a distinguished military background, decades of leadership experience and a deep personal commitment to conservation, people and planet.

Richard’s passion for protecting the natural environment has its roots in his military career and, particularly, the time he spent operating and training in the rainforests of Brunei and Belize. Experiencing these extraordinary environments first-hand gave him a lasting appreciation of both their importance and their vulnerability.

During his military service, Richard also witnessed how knowledge, intelligence and technology could protect and save lives on operations. This ultimately led to a powerful realisation: many of the principles and technologies developed to understand complex operational environments and protect people could also be applied to understanding, conserving and protecting the natural world.

That philosophy has become the foundation of his journey “From National Security to Natural Security.”

Richard founded Secure Forests CIC to turn that philosophy into practical action—combining environmental conservation, technology, education and skills development while creating opportunities for people who can make a positive contribution to the landscapes and communities around them.

As a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), Richard remains passionate about connecting people, technology and the environment. His belief is that protecting the planet requires more than technology alone: it requires knowledge, skilled people, purpose and a genuine connection with the landscapes we are trying to protect.

For Richard, Secure Forests represents the continuation of a lifetime of service—applying the lessons, skills and technologies once used to protect people and national security to a new mission:
