Secure Forests brings together people, practical skills, conservation and technology to create positive outcomes for individuals, communities and the natural environment.
Our work is delivered in real-world settings, combining accredited training and practical conservation with emerging environmental intelligence capability. This allows people to develop valuable skills and experience while contributing directly to the protection, management and understanding of the natural world.
Training & Transition
Our training programmes support people to develop practical skills, confidence and clear pathways towards employment and further opportunities within the environmental and land-based sectors.
Our established seven-week Land Management & Wildlife Conservation Programme combines accredited qualifications, practical conservation, volunteering and employability support. It has primarily supported military and emergency service veterans transitioning into new careers, with our provision now expanding to support additional groups, including young people.
We are also developing commercial and professional training opportunities for individuals and organisations seeking high-quality, practical land-based skills.
Applied Conservation & Land Management
Practical conservation sits at the heart of Secure Forests.
Working at Mount Edgcumbe and across partner sites, our teams and learners contribute directly to woodland management, habitat improvement, estate management and wider conservation activity.
This provides an authentic environment in which people can learn and apply their skills while delivering meaningful environmental outcomes. The result is training with a purpose: developing capable people while supporting the landscapes, habitats and organisations with which we work.
Forest Signal – Environmental Intelligence
Forest Signal is our developing environmental intelligence system, designed to turn environmental data into useful, trusted information for conservation and land-management decision-making.
Building on our environmental monitoring experience, including our original work in Belize, Forest Signal brings together technologies such as satellite imagery, drones, sensors, wildlife monitoring and field observations to provide a clearer picture of what is happening across a landscape.
The system is currently being developed with our technology partners and supported through TechLocal funding from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
Our ambition is to create a practical environmental intelligence capability that can help organisations monitor change, understand risk, protect biodiversity and make better-informed decisions about the environments they manage.
